Las nietas, una por una, bajan por las escaleras oscuras, frías y misteriosas; empujan la puerta y… El tragaldabas es un “comeniños” tradicional de los más populares en la geografía de toda España y, por este motivo, presenta características diferentes según la zona. Esta versión se ajusta bastante a la tradicional. No obstante, hay mayor dosis de humor y un desenlace amable y divertido.

Description in English: The grandmother decides to prepare a surprise for her three granddaughters from the cellar: bread with honey (she had forgotten that this was the Glutton’s favorite food). The granddaughters, one by one, descend the dark, cold and mysterious stairs; they push open the door and… The Glutton is one of the most popular traditional “eaters of children” characters throughout Spain. It is also a traditional tale with variations depending on the region, but with characteristics shared in all its versions: a giant, mean, ugly, and highly voracious monster, who devours children whole and without chewing.
Unlike other monsters that act without warning, the Glutton growls and warns anyone who dares to visit of his uncontrollable hunger, and it swallows the reckless who dare to approach the places it frequents. The unusual hero who saves the day, in all the versions, is the little ant, also common in other traditional tales with a similar narrative structure: “The mountain goat”, “El zamparrón” etc… Pablo Albo’s version is quite faithful to the original, but it is told with a sense of humor and concludes with a funny ending.
If in the story told by Aurelio Espinosa (as well as in alternate versions told in the beginning of the last century) the hero kills the monster, Pablo Albo opts for an entertaining symbolic transformation of the giant, who ends up integrating himself into the world representing the hero. In this way, good triumphs over evil, thanks to the friendly and supportive intervention of the amusing characters with whom the reader will identify.
