«Un Mundo de Cuentos para Ver (Spanish Edition)»

La liebre y la hiena conversan sobre asuntos cotidianos. La mentira es la cosa que más duele del mundo, dijo la liebre; y la hiena se echó a reír. Para demostrárselo, la liebre elabora, en la puerta de palacio, un pastel muy especial que provocará la cólera del rey. Edificante y divertida historia de la tradición oral de Costa de Marfil.

Description in English: The hare and the hyena are talking, during a fishing trip, about routine matters. «The lie is the thing that hurts the most in the world,» said the hare; and the hyena laughed. To conduct this difficult demonstration, the hare prepares, at the gate of the palace, a very special «cake» that will provoke the king’s anger; then he will have the help of the flies, experts in almost…almost all kinds of smells, who will search for the culprit of this work amongst the animals.

The hypothesis formulated by the hare, that what hurts most in the world is a lie, will be demonstrated in a fantastic and funny story that will cause the reader, along with some laughter, reflection and an emotional reaction. For centuries, stories have been, in many African villages, the first school. Although each place has its unique style to appoach storytelling, traditional African tales, in addition to being full of symbolism, treasure ancestral knowledge and wisdom; it is common to find in them cosmological and philosophical meditations on life, a revival of forgotten values, an effort to educate and guide individuals and, as in this case, transmit teachings.

The hyena, who embodies in this story the hypocritical and cruel character of some human beings, will experience the bitter taste of lying on her skin. Roger Olmos’ illustrations present expressive, hyperbolic characters, full of humor. With precise and sharp strokes, he brings his personal vision to a story that, through an entertaining narrative, brings us closer to the word, thought and cultural heritage of the Ivory Coast.
